Robber Wanted for Hate Crime After Brutal Assault in Harlem, NYPD Says

NEW YORK, NY — The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is searching for a robbery suspect accused of violently attacking a man while making racist remarks in East Harlem, police said.


According to investigators, the incident happened late Thursday night, January 8, 2026, around 9:50 p.m., near East 116th Street and 3rd Avenue. Police say a 31-year-old man was approached by an unidentified suspect who allegedly made anti-Hispanic remarks before launching a physical attack.





Authorities say the suspect punched and kicked the victim before forcibly stealing his wallet, which contained about $200 and personal belongings. After the assault and robbery, the suspect fled the area in an unknown direction.



Emergency medical services responded quickly and transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals / Harlem, where he was treated and listed in stable condition, officials confirmed.


Because of the alleged racist remarks made during the attack, the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime, according to the NYPD. Detectives assigned to the Hate Crimes Task Force are actively working to identify and locate the suspect.



Hate crimes remain a serious concern across New York City, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible.


The suspect is described as:


  • Male with a dark complexion


  • Approximately 25 to 36 years old


  • Around 6 feet tall


  • Slim build


  • Medium-length black hair


  • Black goatee


At the time of the incident, police say he was last seen wearing a black and gray jacket, sweatpants, and white shoes.
