NYC LOCAL NEWS - A Bronx man has been indicted for a series of anti-Asian hate crimes, including assaults, throughout Chinatown and Lower Manhattan and an attack on a police officer, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg announced.

Clive Porter, 34, has been indicted for allegedly committing five anti-Asian attacks in Lower Manhattan and attacking a police officer while under arrest all on October 29, 2025. Porter is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree as a Hate Crime, Assault in the Second Degree, and Attempted Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, among other charges

As outlined in court documents, the alleged attacks began shortly before 9:40 a.m. in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood and unfolded rapidly. At approximately 9:40 a.m., an elderly Asian man was walking near Hester and Eldridge Streets when Porter allegedly elbowed him in the face. The victim suffered a broken nose and a brain bleed and was later hospitalized.

Just one minute later, around 9:41 a.m., a second elderly Asian man was attacked near Canal and Eldridge Streets. Prosecutors allege Porter elbowed him in the face, knocking him to the ground, and used an anti-Asian slur during the assault.

At 9:42 a.m., while standing on Eldridge Street between Forsyth and Division Streets, Porter allegedly targeted a third Asian individual. After the victim briefly glanced in his direction, Porter is accused of reaching into the victim’s jacket pocket and stealing an item before walking away.

Moments later, at approximately 9:44 a.m., an elderly Asian woman was attacked at the corner of Forsyth Street and East Broadway. Prosecutors allege Porter punched her in the face, causing her to fall and strike her head on the pavement. She was hospitalized with a head wound that required staples.

Violent Subway Assault at Bowery Station

Authorities say the violence did not stop there. Several hours later, at about 4:09 p.m., Porter allegedly assaulted a fifth Asian victim on the platform of the Bowery subway station in Lower Manhattan.

According to the indictment, Porter punched the victim, knocking him to the ground, and then began kicking him. The victim jumped onto the subway tracks to escape. As Porter walked away, the victim reported hearing another anti-Asian slur. The victim later pulled himself back onto the platform and contacted police.

The injuries were severe. Prosecutors say the victim suffered multiple broken bones in his jaw and cheek and required facial reconstruction surgery.

Arrest and Alleged Assault on an NYPD Officer

Approximately 40 minutes after the subway attack, police arrested Porter near the station. Authorities state he was wearing the same clothing seen in surveillance footage from all of the incidents.

While under arrest, Porter allegedly head butted an NYPD officer, causing substantial pain. That incident led to additional assault charges.

Charges Filed Against Clive Porter

Porter now faces a wide range of charges, including multiple hate crime enhancements:

  • Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime (two counts, Class C felony)

  • Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree as a Hate Crime (one count, Class D felony)

  • Assault in the Second Degree (one count, Class D felony)

  • Attempted Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime (one count, Class D felony)

  • Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime (two counts, Class E felony)

  • Attempted Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime (one count, Class A misdemeanor)

  • Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree (two counts, Class A misdemeanor)

District Attorney Bragg Speaks Out on Hate Crimes

In announcing the indictment, District Attorney Bragg emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of addressing bias-motivated violence.

“As alleged, Clive Porter carried out a spree of unprovoked, anti-Asian attacks on unsuspecting strangers – most within the span of mere minutes,” Bragg said. “We further allege he purposefully targeted these individuals and was motivated by racial bias. Every New Yorker deserves to live free of fear, and we will vigorously confront crimes driven by prejudice and hatred.”

Bragg also encouraged anyone who has experienced or witnessed a hate crime or bias incident to report it safely to the Manhattan D.A.’s Hate Crimes Unit Hotline at 212-335-3100.

Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Acknowledged

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Phillip Klindt of Trial Bureau 70, under the supervision of leaders within the Hate Crimes Unit and Trial Division. The District Attorney’s Office credited several analysts for their investigative support and thanked the NYPD, specifically officers and detectives from the 5th Precinct and the Hate Crimes Task Force, for their work on the case.

This indictment comes amid continued concern about anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City, particularly attacks targeting elderly residents. Prosecutors say the rapid sequence of alleged assaults, the repeated use of racial slurs, and the severity of the injuries underscore the importance of aggressive enforcement of hate crime laws.

As the case moves forward in Manhattan Supreme Court, it serves as a reminder that bias-motivated violence will be investigated, charged, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
