NYC LOCAL NEWS - In a shocking development, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. announced the indictment of Ahmad Mossad, a 23-year-old food cart vendor, for the attempted murder of a 45-year-old club promoter in a horrific fire attack that took place earlier this year in Times Square. Mossad has been charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree and Assault in the First Degree, following an incident that left the victim with severe burns across nearly 20% of his body.

The indictment comes after months of investigation and a dramatic international manhunt, which saw Mossad fleeing to Egypt shortly after the March attack. He was arrested at JFK Airport in November 2025, marking the end of his eight-month attempt to evade justice.

The Violent Attack in Times Square

The incident unfolded in the early hours of March 16, 2025, when Mossad allegedly poured gasoline into a small bottle from his food cart stationed on West 41st Street in Times Square. According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, the victim, a club promoter, initially had a brief interaction with Mossad at around 3:50 a.m. After walking away, the victim unknowingly crossed paths with Mossad again, who had by then prepared to attack.

Mossad lit the gasoline-soaked bottle with a lighter and set the victim on fire as he walked past the cart. The victim was engulfed in flames and screamed for help as he ran through the busy streets of Times Square. Two NYC police officers quickly intervened, using fire extinguishers to put out the flames, before rushing the victim to the hospital.

The victim, who suffered second- and third-degree burns, was placed in a medically induced coma for several weeks, while his body recovered from the extensive injuries.

The horrific attack drew widespread media attention, and the search for Mossad intensified when authorities learned he had fled the country.

Mossad Flees to Egypt, but Justice Prevails

Following the violent assault, Mossad allegedly fled New York City, boarding a flight to Egypt within hours of setting the victim on fire. Despite his attempt to escape justice by fleeing overseas, authorities continued to work relentlessly to locate and apprehend him. It wasn't until November 25, 2025, when Mossad returned to the U.S., that he was arrested at JFK Airport by New York City police officers.

DA Bragg expressed relief at the arrest, stating, “This alleged attempted murder is absolutely heinous. The defendant allegedly sought to evade accountability for more than eight months by fleeing overseas but was eventually apprehended thanks to the hard work of our prosecutors and the NYPD.” He continued, “I know the victim has suffered excruciatingly painful injuries as a result of this incident, and I hope he can continue to improve and recover.”

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Mossad faces serious criminal charges in New York State Supreme Court:

  • Attempted Murder in the First Degree (Class B felony)

  • Assault in the First Degree (Class B felony)

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Carfagno, under the supervision of several senior prosecutors, including Mark Dahl, Amy Hare, and Nicole Blomberg.

If convicted, Mossad could face a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes, including the attempted murder of the victim, who remains in recovery. The indictment has sent shockwaves through the city, with many wondering how such a brutal and senseless attack could unfold in one of the world’s busiest tourist destinations.

The Victim’s Condition and Recovery

The victim of this brutal attack, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, suffered life-threatening injuries after being set on fire. He was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent extensive treatment to address the second- and third-degree burns covering nearly 20% of his body. Doctors have reported that he is now in the process of recovery, though the emotional and physical toll of the attack is expected to stay with him for the long term.

As one of New York’s most iconic locations, Times Square is typically bustling with both locals and tourists, and the chilling nature of the attack has left many residents and visitors feeling uneasy. The NYPD officers who rushed to the victim's aid have been hailed as heroes for their quick action, helping to save his life.

Legal and Investigative Efforts

The investigation into Mossad's actions was extensive, involving law enforcement agencies across the country and internationally. Detective Lauren Helmeset of the Midtown South Precinct Detective Squad, along with Detectives Blair Fauntleroy and Joseph Cohen of Manhattan South Homicide, played key roles in tracking down Mossad after his escape.

Police Officers Jonathan Chau and Kelly Tuechler of the 111th Precinct were also credited with their swift response to extinguish the flames and provide immediate medical assistance to the victim.

In a statement acknowledging the investigation team's efforts, DA Bragg remarked, “The commitment and teamwork of our law enforcement partners were crucial in bringing this defendant to justice. We will continue to hold those who commit such heinous acts accountable, no matter where they attempt to flee.”

The Road Ahead: What’s Next for Ahmad Mossad?

The legal process for Mossad is just beginning, but the impact of his actions will be felt for years to come. District Attorney Bragg and his office will pursue justice for the victim, ensuring that Mossad faces the full consequences of his brutal attack. As the case proceeds, more details about the attack and Mossad’s motivations may emerge, but for now, New Yorkers can take comfort knowing that the man responsible for such a senseless act of violence is behind bars.

The indictment of Ahmad Mossad marks a significant moment in the fight for justice for victims of violent crimes in New York City. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk even in the most iconic, heavily trafficked parts of the city. For those affected, the road to recovery will be long, but the legal system is on their side, working tirelessly to ensure those who commit such horrific acts face consequences.

As the case unfolds, many will be watching to see what happens next in this high-profile case. In the meantime, the focus remains on the victim’s recovery and the commitment of law enforcement to bring justice to the streets of New York.
