NEW YORK, NY - Cops have arrested a Brooklyn man in the horrifying stabbing at Union Square station. The victim was stabbed in the back during what cops are describing as a random attack.

According to police, Christopher Betancourt, a 25-year-old Brooklyn resident, was taken into custody on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m. within the confines of the 13th Precinct. He has been charged with assault.

The arrest marks a significant development in what authorities described as an ongoing investigation into a violent morning attack that left a commuter hospitalized.

Police say the incident occurred on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at approximately 9:50 a.m.

A 45-year-old man had just exited a northbound L train at the busy Union Square station when, according to investigators, an unidentified individual approached him on the platform and stabbed him multiple times in the back with a knife.

The suspect then allegedly fled the scene by boarding a southbound L train, traveling to parts unknown.

Emergency Medical Services responded quickly and transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was listed in stable condition.

At the time, the NYPD released media and asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in the Union Square subway stabbing.

Following weeks of investigation, police confirmed that Betancourt, who resides at Geneva Loop in Brooklyn, was arrested within the confines of the 13th Precinct.

Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding motive or whether the victim and suspect were known to each other.

The charge currently filed is assault. As with all criminal cases, the charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The December 2025 Union Square L train stabbing highlights continued concerns about subway platform safety in high-traffic transit hubs. The 14 Street–Union Square station is one of Manhattan’s busiest transit connections, serving multiple subway lines and thousands of commuters daily.

The NYPD has not indicated whether additional charges are pending or if further arrests are expected.
