New York, NY – March 2, 2026 – The sound of rhythmic drums echoed through the auditorium at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur Skilled Nursing Facility as patients, long-term care residents, families, and staff gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2026 in Lower Manhattan. This year marks the Year of the Fire Horse, which officially began on February 17, and the celebration brought color, culture, and community directly to residents receiving care.

Partnering with NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur, the skilled nursing facility hosted an interactive Lunar New Year cultural celebration featuring traditional Lion Dance performances for nursing home residents, Tai Chi demonstrations for senior healthcare patients, and meaningful Chinese New Year rituals designed to symbolize prosperity, health, and renewal.

The Gouverneur auditorium was transformed into a vibrant space filled with red decorations and participants wearing red shirts — a nod to the cultural symbolism of red in Chinese tradition. In Chinese culture, red represents happiness, energy, good fortune, and protection against negativity.

For many residents and families, this Lunar New Year celebration at a New York City skilled nursing facility felt both festive and deeply personal.

“It’s one of our most cherished celebrations,” said CEO Susan Sales. “Our residents, patients, staff, and community are always amazed by the drums of the Lion Dance and the athleticism of the performers.”

This year’s celebration welcomed back two beloved performance groups: the New York Love Song and Dance Troupe and the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute. They delivered a dynamic Tai Chi Fan Dance performance followed by the highly anticipated Lion Dance for healthcare residents.

One of the most symbolic moments of the event was the Cai Qing lion dance ceremony symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. During Cai Qing, the lion “consumes” lettuce — which symbolizes good fortune — and then “spits out” the remains to spread prosperity and blessings to the audience.

For residents of the Lower East Side long-term care facility, the performance wasn’t just entertainment; it was a shared cultural experience that connected generations.

Residents also presented mandarin oranges, symbolizing gold and wealth, along with red envelopes known as hung bao (Mandarin) or lai see (Cantonese), which traditionally promote good health and prosperity.

Hosting a Lunar New Year celebration inside a New York City public hospital and skilled nursing facility highlights the broader mission of NYC Health + Hospitals — delivering culturally responsive care while honoring the diverse communities it serves.

Dr. Morris Gagliardi, Regional Medical Director for Manhattan, noted that the Year of the Fire Horse represents energy, confidence, and forward momentum.

“We wish everyone a year filled with good health and happiness, as we work together to promote comprehensive healthcare for all in the community,” he said.

Lower Manhattan is home to one of the most vibrant Asian American communities in the United States, and events like this community-based Lunar New Year healthcare celebration in Lower Manhattan reflect that cultural richness.

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal emphasized the importance of public institutions creating spaces of belonging. “Seeing residents, families, and performers fill Gouverneur with the colors and traditions of Lunar New Year speaks to the heart of what public institutions should do,” he said.

Council Member Christopher Marte echoed that sentiment, noting that healthcare is about more than medicine — it’s about dignity, joy, and connection.

Congressman Dan Goldman and Community Advisory Board Chair Pauline Lock also joined the celebration, highlighting the annual tradition as a reminder of the vibrancy and diversity of the Lower East Side.

Beyond the festivities, the event also served as an opportunity to connect families with healthcare resources. NYC Care partner Raising Health shared information about the low- or no-cost comprehensive healthcare services for uninsured New Yorkers program that expands access to care across the city.

Local elected officials and community leaders received citations from the offices of NYS Assembly Member Grace Lee and Congressman Dan Goldman in recognition of the Lunar New Year celebration.

As the drums quieted and the lion took its final bow, one thing was clear: this was more than a performance. It was a reminder that culturally inclusive healthcare events in New York City nursing homes matter — especially for long-term care residents who call Gouverneur home.

The Year of the Fire Horse symbolizes movement, vitality, and optimism. At NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur, those qualities were on full display — in every drumbeat, every red envelope, and every smiling face in the crowd.

For patients, families, and staff, the Lunar New Year 2026 celebration wasn’t just about welcoming a new calendar year. It was about honoring tradition, strengthening community bonds, and beginning the year with hope.
