NEW YORK, NY - A gunman’s unique red bonet led to his arrest and a shocking realization: the suspect is only 15-years-old.
Cops charged the teen in connection with the shocking daytime shooting on a busy street on Morningside Avenue. Investigators released surveillance video of the suspect with the gun and wearing a large, unique red bonet. Apparently the photos led to tips that led to the arrest.
According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 11:37 a.m. in front of 143 Morningside Avenue, within the 26th Precinct.
Authorities reported that an unidentified individual discharged a firearm one time before fleeing the scene on foot. The suspect was seen running toward West 126 Street and Morningside Avenue.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire in what officials are calling a broad daylight firearm discharge in a residential Manhattan neighborhood.
After seeking help from the public and reviewing evidence, police have now taken a 15-year-old male into custody in connection with the incident.
The teen is facing multiple serious criminal charges, including:
- Attempted murder
- Attempted assault
- Criminal possession of a weapon
- Reckless endangerment.
These charges stem from what authorities describe as a New York City attempted murder and weapons possession case involving a minor suspect. Due to the suspect’s age, authorities have not released his identity. However, the severity of the charges indicates that prosecutors believe the incident posed a significant risk to public safety.
Police say the individual now in custody matches the description and is believed to be the same person involved in the shooting, previously highlighted in a NYPD public assistance request for unidentified shooting suspect in Harlem area.
Even though no one was injured, the fact that a firearm was discharged in broad daylight in a residential Manhattan neighborhood has raised concerns among residents.
