NEW YORK, NY - Residents in Harlem are on edge after a shocking broad daylight shooting near a Harlem church on Morningside Avenue unfolded, and now the NYPD is asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect. Cops are hoping the alleged gunman’s distinctive shower cap will help lead to his arrest.

According to police, the incident happened on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 11:37 a.m. in front of 143 Morningside Avenue—just steps away from St. Joseph Church of the Holy Family. Authorities say an unidentified man suddenly discharged a firearm in the area before fleeing on foot, in what is now being described as a Harlem daytime shooting incident with no reported injuries.

The suspect, described as a male, was last seen wearing a red bonnet—described by some as resembling a shower cap—along with a black sweater, black pants, and gray sneakers. The distinctive headwear has become a key detail in the ongoing search, as investigators hope it will help someone recognize him in connection with the NYPD search for suspect wearing red bonnet in Harlem shooting.

Police say the man ran northbound toward West 126 Street and Morningside Avenue immediately after the shooting. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported, marking this as a reckless endangerment shooting case in Harlem 26th Precinct.

The case is being investigated as reckless endangerment within the 26th Precinct, and the New York City Police Department has released images of the suspect in hopes of generating leads tied to the unidentified gunman fleeing Morningside Avenue shooting scene.

For many in the community, the fact that the gunfire erupted in the middle of the day—and so close to a place of worship—has raised concerns about public safety in the area. Morningside Avenue is typically busy during late morning hours, making this daytime gunfire near Harlem church raising community safety concerns even more unsettling for residents and passersby.

Now, investigators are urging anyone who may have seen something or recognizes the individual to come forward. Even small details could make a difference in identifying and locating the suspect connected to the April 1 2026 Harlem shooting investigation on Morningside Avenue.
