NEW YORK, NY - A supermarket shoplifter beat a worker with a baseball bat when he refused to pay at a Chelsea Gristedes, around the corner from where the mayor’s mother has a loft.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on April 27, 2026, at approximately 2:25 pm inside a Gristedes Supermarket located at 225 9 Avenue in Chelsea. The victim, a 58-year-old male employee, was carrying out his normal duties when an unidentified man entered the premises.
Police say the suspect began removing items from the store without attempting to pay, escalating the situation into what is now being investigated as a violent robbery at 225 9 Avenue in Manhattan. When the suspect tried to leave with the merchandise, the situation quickly turned dangerous.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly struck the victim multiple times with a bat. The attack left the employee with serious injuries.
Emergency medical services responded swiftly to the scene. The victim suffered lacerations to both his head and body as a result of the attack. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was listed in stable condition.
At this time, the suspect remains unidentified and fled the scene with stolen items. Police are actively investigating and reviewing available evidence.
