Police were searching for the suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Darrel Rodriguez of Fordham Heights.

What Happened in the Fatal E Train Shooting in Midtown Manhattan?

According to police, Rodriguez was waiting for a northbound E train at the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue subway station in New York City around 12:20 a.m. on October 17 when the suspect approached him.

A dispute broke out between the two men, police said. The suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Rodriguez in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Rodriguez was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the deadly shooting inside the Midtown Manhattan subway station, authorities launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Images of the suspect’s distinctive red-and-black outfit were circulated on news broadcasts and social media as investigators sought to identify and locate him.

Midtown Subway Shooting Becomes Issue in New York Governor’s Race

The fatal NYC subway shooting in Midtown Manhattan also became a focus of debate over public safety and crime in the New York governor’s race.

Last week, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman rode the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Penn Station before visiting the same subway station where Rodriguez was shot. During the visit, Blakeman criticized Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani over what he described as their failure to address subway crime.

“First of all, the crime on the subway has risen tremendously under Kathy Hochul and Zohran Mamdani. I will be committed to public safety,” Blakeman said.

Blakeman said that if elected governor, he would increase police presence throughout the transit system, add more subway conductors, and improve lighting.

“I will make sure that public transportation is safer and cleaner for the traveling public,” Blakeman said during the subway press conference.

The arrest marks a major development in the investigation into the October 17 fatal shooting at the 53rd Street subway station, a case that drew attention to subway safety in New York City.
