Walgreens Recalls Nasal Spray Out of ‘Abundance of Caution’

The product in question—Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with xylitol—was manufactured by Medical Products Laboratories, a company based in Philadelphia. According to the FDA, the bottles may contain pseudomonas lactis, a type of bacteria that’s usually found in the environment, such as in soil and water. The CDC notes that this bacterium has even been detected in chicken feces, based on a 2022 study on antibiotic resistance. Not exactly something you want in a bottle you spray up your nose.
Now, for most people, exposure to pseudomonas lactis wouldn’t cause major issues. But health officials in southeastern Massachusetts, along with news outlets like KARE 11, warn that it can pose a real risk to people with weakened immune systems or respiratory problems. WTVT also reports that it may be harmful for those who are pregnant. That’s why the FDA classifies this as a Class II recall, meaning the product could lead to temporary or medically reversible health problems.
If you have this product at home, don’t use it—just take it back to Walgreens for a full refund. The company says customer safety is their top priority, and returning the spray is the easiest way to stay on the safe side.
It’s definitely not the news anyone wants right as sniffles and congestion start spreading, but catching the issue early may help keep vulnerable people safe. Stay healthy out there—and maybe double-check your medicine shelf while you’re at it.
