According to the NYPD, Dariel Castillo, a 28-year-old Manhattan resident, was arrested and charged with assault on February 4, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m., following an ongoing investigation into the incident. The arrest took place within the confines of the 13th Precinct, authorities confirmed.
Castillo, who lives on Second Avenue in Manhattan, is accused of carrying out the knife attack inside a subway station mezzanine in the early hours of Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
Police say the stabbing happened at approximately 5:11 a.m., inside the station’s mezzanine area. Investigators report that a 51-year-old man became involved in a verbal dispute with another individual while inside the station.
As the victim was leaving the subway station, the situation escalated suddenly.
Authorities allege that the suspect approached the victim from behind and stabbed him multiple times in the back with a knife, catching him off guard. After the attack, the suspect fled the station on foot, heading in an unknown direction.
Emergency medical services responded quickly to the scene. The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals / Bellevue, where he was treated for his injuries. Police said the man was listed in stable condition following the attack.
Following the stabbing, detectives continued to investigate the incident, ultimately leading to Castillo’s arrest just over a week later. Police have not released details on how Castillo was identified or whether the victim and suspect were known to each other.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent crimes reported in New York City subway stations, particularly during early morning hours. NYPD officials continue to urge riders to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity.
