NEW YORK, NY - A career criminal, who was on parole for a previous sex attack, was arrested today for allegedly trying to rape a woman in Central Park in broad daylight.

According to the New York Police Department, 30-year-old Lateef Caldwell is accused of attacking a 45-year-old woman near 109th Street and East Drive in Central Park at around 5:40 p.m.

Police say the suspect allegedly attempted to sexually assault the woman in a highly trafficked part of the park during the early evening hours. The situation could have escalated further if not for the intervention of witnesses.

Three women who were nearby saw what was happening and immediately stepped in, confronting the suspect and forcing him to stop, according to law enforcement sources. Their actions not only prevented further harm but also helped bring the situation under control quickly.

The bystanders then alerted authorities, triggering a rapid police response to the Central Park attempted rape near 109th Street.

After being confronted, Caldwell allegedly tried to flee the area. However, officers were able to track him down and arrest him just minutes later near 106th Street and East Drive, still within Central Park.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that he was taken into custody without further incident following the attempted rape incident in Central Park New York.

The 45-year-old victim did not report any physical injuries following the attempted attack. Sources indicated she was wearing a hijab at the time, though police have not released additional identifying details.

Caldwell now faces multiple charges, including:
