Increasingly, young people navigating the road to adulthood face debilitating insecurity, loneliness, depression, and worse. Kids often have a lot to carry on their shoulders, and when this burden becomes overwhelming the consequences can be devastating. Today, there is growing concern among parents, teachers, and behavioral health providers about how to identify and communicate with children whose struggles put them at risk for suicide and self-harming behaviors. The CDC reports that suicide rates for young people between the ages of 10 and 24 are the highest they’ve been in years. Investigators believe the suspect is a food delivery driver. At around 8:30 am on June 17, a 42-year-old woman was pushing her 2-year-old son in a stroller at the intersection of Park Place and Broadway, across from City Hall Park. Cops say the mom had the right of way and was crossing the intersection when she was struck by an e-bike heading south on Broadway.  The impact knocked over the stroller and threw the child to the ground, cops said. Straphanger Stabbed in Harlem, Treated in the Bronx

Police are searching for this man in connection with a stabbing inside a Number 5 train. -Photo by NYPD By Dan Gesslein Manhattan Voice June 23, 2023 NEW YORK - A man stabbed on a subway train in East Harlem was treated in the Bronx in what cops are calling a dispute that turned violent.  At around 6:40 pm on June 21, a 45-year-old man got into a verbal dispute with another rider inside a Bronx bound 5 Train in East Harlem. As the arguement  escalated, cops said, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the straphanger in the abdomen.    According to investigators, the attacker jumped off the train at the 125th Street Station and then ran up the stairs into the street and fled in an unknown direction.  EMS raced to the scene and transported the victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln on 149th Street in the Bronx. The victim is recovering and is listed in stable condition.  Police released surveillance video of the suspect who was last seen walking across a subway platform.

Security Guard Slashed by CVS Shoplifter

Police are searching for this man in connection with the slashing of a security guard during a shoplifting incident in a Manhattan CVS. -Photo by NYPD By Dan Gesslein  Manhattan Voice  June 22, 2023 MANHATTAN - A security guard is recovering after being slashed in the face when he tried to stop a shoplifter at an Upper East Side CVS, cops said.  At around 11:30 pm on June 19, a man wearing a face mask, Du-Rag and backpack walked into the CVS at 305 East 86 Street. Cops said the man then removed toiletry items that were on display and shoved them into his brown backpack.  As the shoplifter tried to exit the store, the manager and a 62-year-old security guard tried to confront him. Cops said the suspect then pulled out a knife and slashed the security guard across the left side of his face causing a large laceration.  The attacker then took off in an unknown direction.  The bleeding security guard was rushed to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center where he was

Poor Air Quality Leads to more Asthma Hospitalizations

-File Photo Findings Published in the Journal of Asthma Suggest Pollution May Cause More Severe Asthma Exacerbations for Children  Bronx Voice  June 22, 2023 NEW YORK – Children with asthma spend more time in the hospital when there is a greater amount of particulate matter (PM 2.5) - tiny pieces of solids or liquids - and Ozone (O ₃ ) - a colorless gas - in the air, according to a new study by researchers at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM). The study, just published in the Journal of Asthma , comes days after New York City was blanketed in wildfire smoke.   In this first-of-its-kind study in children, led by pediatric hospitalist, Elissa B. Gross, D.O., M.P.H, the investigators assessed medical records of more than 1,700 children, aged 2 – 18-years-old, admitted to CHAM between 2017 – 2019 and found that the mean length of stay increased up to 10% for every 10 micrograms of pollutants per cubic meter of air - equating to longer length of stay during time
