MANHATTAN - A woman riding the subway was able to fend off an attacker who tried to rape her inside a subway car, cops said.

Police released a photo of the suspect wanted for sexually assaulting a female straphanger inside a subway train at the Chambers Street station on a Friday night.

At around 9 pm on June 9, a 29-year-old was riding in a southbound J Train at the Chambers Street station. While sitting inside the car a man walked over to her, exposed his penis and attempted to force her to perform oral sex, cops said.

When she resisted the man punched the victim. He then pinned the woman to the ground and tried to removed her clothes, cops said. He then removed the victim’s cash, cellphone and keys. The woman was able to break away from her attacker and ran off the train.

Cops said the attacker stayed on the train as it continued southbound. It is unknown at this time what stop the suspect got off the train.

The suspect is described as a man with a dark complexion between the ages of 30 and 40. He is 5 foot 6 to 5 foot 7 tall. He was last seen wearing a navy blue hooded sweatshirt and pants. The sweatshirt had the word “Champion” written across the chest. He also wore black and white sneakers and a white face mask. He had a tan bag slung across his shoulder.
