NEW YORK - Police are investigating an assault as a possible hate crime attack in the Union Square area back in June.

The NYPD just released photos from surveillance video of two young suspects in the assault. News of the June attack comes after the dramatic events of last week’s riot in Union Square during a video game console giveaway gone wrong and the funeral for a gay man stabbed to death for dancing at a Brooklyn gas station.

At around 8 pm on June 28, two 23-year-old men were sitting on a bench in the vicinity of East 13 Street and Broadway, a block away from Union Square. Two young men walked up to them and started making “anti-LBTQ remarks.”

As the two groups began arguing, the aggressors began punching the men in the head and shoving them in the chest. The attackers fled northbound on Broadway towards Union Square Park.

The victims refused medical attention at the scene.

The NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the attack.

The two suspects are males with light complexions who were dressed in black at the time.

The first suspect has blond hair. He wore a black t-shirt with a red and yellow graphic on the chest. He also wore a black hoodie and black jeans. The second suspect wore a black t-shirt with a graphic on the chest. He also wore a red knitted cap.

News of the June attack comes after heightened tensions following the murder of O'Shae Sibley who was stabbed to death while dancing at a Brooklyn gas station. A 17-year-old was arrested for the slaying and charged with murder as a hate crime.
