NEW YORK - A police officer is recovering after being assaulted with a construction barrel during the Union Square riot. Now investigators are asking for the public’s help in trying to catch the attackers.

The officer was attacked during the August 4th riot in Union Square Park. Thousands of people swarmed the park as part of a PS5 giveaway from influencer Kai Cenat. Event organizers did not have a permit and cops said the event got out of control when thousands showed up and got rowdy. Rioters damaged various property including a hot dog cart, several police cars and civilian vehicles and injuries.

As police tried to disperse the crowd, several got rowdy. Cops said two people in the crowd picked up a construction barrel and threw it at officers trying to get control of the crowd. A 59-year-old on-duty police officer was struck by the barrel. Officials said the officer suffered multiple injuries about the head and body.

Police released multiple photos taken from cell photo and surveillance video at the riot. The photos are of the two main suspects in the assault on the officer.

Cenat was charged with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. He was given a desk-appearance ticket.
