MANHATTAN - Police have arrested the man, they say, yelled “I Hate Mexicans” as he slashed a man’s face during a hate crime in Washington Heights.

Police arrested 46-year-old Demont Drawhorn and charged him with hate crime/assault, assault, hate crime/aggravated harassment and criminal posession of a weapon.

The arrest stemmed from an attack back in October in which a Good Samaritan tried to break up a fight and instead got slashed in the face for his trouble.

At around 7 pm on October 23, police responded to a call of an assault at a candy store on West 161st Street in Washington Heights. An investigation revealed that the attack stemmed from an assault involving three customers- two arguing and one trying to break it up.

Cops say that two customers got into a heated argument inside 600 Candy Grocery. The fight escalated and turned physical after the first customer, whom police have identified as Drawhorn, allegedly stated “I hate Mexicans.”

As the two men fought a third customer tried to step in the middle of the fighters to try to break it up. Cops say instead of listening, Drawhorn pulled out a knife and slashed the Good Samaritan across the face. The attacker then ran out of the store.

The victim suffered a minor laceration but refused medical attention. The case was investigated by the Hate Crimes Task Force. A photo of the suspect holding the knife was released the public.

This eventually led to the arrest of Drawhorn and the charges of hate crimes.
